Diabetes isn't just one condition. There are a few different types, and knowing which is which helps make sense of the rest of this Education Center.

Type 1 diabetes happens when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. It's usually diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults, though it can appear at any age. People with Type 1 diabetes need insulin treatment for life. There's currently no way to prevent it, and it isn't caused by diet, weight, or lifestyle. With proper treatment and support, people with Type 1 diabetes live full, active lives.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type by far, making up the large majority of diabetes cases worldwide. With Type 2, the body still produces insulin, but the cells don't respond to it well, a state often called insulin resistance. Over time, the pancreas struggles to keep up, and blood sugar rises. Type 2 diabetes usually develops gradually in adults, and is linked to a mix of genetics, weight, and everyday habits, which is also good news, because many of the same factors that raise risk can be changed to lower it.

Gestational diabetes can develop during pregnancy, usually in the second or third trimester, when pregnancy hormones make it harder for the body to use insulin effectively. It's typically managed with diet, monitoring, and sometimes medication, and usually goes away after the baby is born. But it's not the end of the story. It raises the mother's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life, and can affect the baby's long-term health too, so follow-up checkups after delivery matter just as much as care during pregnancy.

Prediabetes isn't a separate disease so much as an early warning stage. Blood sugar is higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be called diabetes. It often has no symptoms at all, which is why it's usually found through a checkup rather than how someone feels. The upside is that prediabetes is one of the best opportunities to change course: many people who adjust their diet and activity levels at this stage bring their blood sugar back into a normal range.

Why the difference matters: Each type has a different cause and a different path forward, but all of them benefit from the same foundation. Regular checkups, a healthy daily routine, and taking any warning signs seriously rather than waiting them out.
